Each institution will have own anti-risk system. At the most basic trading room level, banks have clearly established volume or position limits on the maximum open position that each trader or group can carry overnight, with separate — probably less restrictive — intraday or "daylight" limits on the maximum open position that can be taken during the course of a trading session. These limits are carefully and closely monitored, and authority to exceed them, even temporarily, requires approval of a senior officer. Firms dealing in forex put limits, not only on the overall volume of their foreign exchange position, but also on their estimated potential losses during, say, the next 24 hours, which they estimate through calculations of "value at risk" (VAR), "daily earnings at risk" (DEAR), or other dollars-at-risk measurements. Thus, a trading unit might have an overnight volume limit of say, $10 million, and also a VAR limit of, say, $150,000.
